How many miles do I need for a flight?
For M&M partner airlines (United, Turkish, Thai and others) as well as ITA Airways, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings, fixed zone rates have applied since the June 2025 devaluation: Economy Frankfurt–New York costs 50,000 miles, Business 125,000 miles (round trip). For Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, LH City, Discover Airlines and Air Dolomiti, dynamic prices apply that vary by date and demand.
How high are the taxes and fees on an award flight?
Taxes and fees vary by route and class between roughly €125 and €680. Business and First Class have higher surcharges. Departures from cheaper countries (e.g. Athens, Sofia) can have significantly lower fees.
What is a sweet spot on award flights?
A sweet spot is a route where the ratio of miles to ticket value is particularly good. Example: Frankfurt to Istanbul in Business Class costs 50,000 miles + about €120 taxes via Turkish Airlines – that equals a saving of about 50% versus the cash price of about €1,500.
How do I calculate the cent-per-mile value?
The formula: (cash price - taxes/fees) ÷ miles × 100 = cents per mile. Over 2 cents/mile is good, over 3 cents very good. Business and First Class typically offer the highest value (2-6 cents/mile).
