Business Class from New York for €624: My Experience Report (2026)
How I flew Lufthansa Business Class from New York to Munich for €624 instead of €3,500. Step-by-step experience report with concrete numbers.
Quick answer: Lufthansa Business Class New York → Munich for €624 instead of €3,500 (82% savings). Used: only free/cheap cards (PAYBACK AMEX + DM PAYBACK AMEX + M&M Blue). Collected 20,000 PAYBACK points in 10 months through everyday purchases with eCoupons, converted them with a 25% transfer bonus into 25,000 M&M miles. Cents-per-mile value: 6.1 cents.
€3,500 for a Lufthansa Business Class ticket from New York to Munich. Or €624. I chose the second option - and that’s exactly what miles are for.
In this experience report I’ll show you step by step how I booked my Business Class flight. No theory, just real numbers, real costs, and the real process from the first card to boarding.

The result up front
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Route | New York (JFK) → Munich (MUC), one-way |
| Class | Lufthansa Business Class |
| Regular ticket price | ~€3,500 |
| My cost: miles | 48,000 Miles & More |
| My cost: taxes & fees | €569 |
| My cost: card annual fees | €55 |
| Total cost | €624 |
| Savings | ~€2,876 (82%) |
No trick, no hack, no shady method. Just the right cards, the right strategy, and a bit of patience.
The starting point
I had planned a trip to New York and wanted to fly the return leg in Business Class - but not pay €3,500 for it. My plan: collect Miles & More miles, mainly via PAYBACK points with the transfer bonus.
What I needed for that:
- Approx. 48,000 Miles & More miles (dynamic price, one-way Business JFK→MUC)
- Taxes and fees (~€570)
- A strategy to collect miles on the ground - without flying
Step 1: Apply for the cards (January)
First I laid the groundwork - with three cards:
| Card | Annual fee | Welcome bonus | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| PAYBACK AMEX* | €0 | 4,000 PAYBACK points | Free, collect PAYBACK points |
| DM PAYBACK AMEX* | €0 | 4,000 PAYBACK points | Free, double points at dm |
| M&M Blue | €66/year | 500 miles | Mile-expiry protection + collect M&M miles |
Costs so far: €0 (PAYBACK AMEX is free, M&M Blue I only pay from the next month)
Collected: 2,500 points/miles from welcome bonuses (2,000 PAYBACK + 500 M&M) + €40 Wunschgutschein vouchers
Step 2: Collect PAYBACK points (February - June)
Over the next 5 months I consistently collected PAYBACK points. Not by spending more - but by running my normal purchases through PAYBACK.
My monthly PAYBACK routine
| Source | Points/month | Details |
|---|---|---|
| EDEKA weekly shop (€200) | ~500-1,000 | Base + eCoupons (5x, 7x) |
| dm drugstore (€60) | ~200-400 | DM PAYBACK AMEX + eCoupons (10x) |
| Aral fuel (€120) | ~200-350 | Base + eCoupons (3x, 5x) |
| PAYBACK AMEX card spend | ~200 | 1 point per €3 at non-partners |
| Other PAYBACK partners | ~100-250 | Amazon, Fressnapf, etc. |
| Monthly average | ~1,500-2,500 |
The key: PAYBACK eCoupons. Open the app every morning, activate all coupons. 5 minutes of effort for 3-10x more points on every purchase.
5-month PAYBACK balance
| Month | Points collected | Cumulative (incl. bonuses) |
|---|---|---|
| February | 1,800 | 11,800 |
| March | 2,200 | 14,000 |
| April | 1,600 | 15,600 |
| May | 2,000 | 17,600 |
| June | 2,400 | 20,000 |
20,000 PAYBACK points in 6 months (incl. 10,000 welcome bonuses) - through completely normal everyday purchases. No extra money spent, just shopped more deliberately.
Pro tip: With the advanced strategies in the Premium Handbook, 50,000+ PAYBACK points in 6 months are realistic. The difference lies in coupon stacking and the Wunschgutschein strategy.
Step 3: The transfer bonus (June)
Now came the decisive moment. In June, the PAYBACK → Miles & More transfer bonus promotion with 25% extra started.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| PAYBACK points collected | 20,000 |
| Transfer ratio | 1:1 |
| Transfer bonus | 25% extra |
| M&M miles received | 25,000 |
20,000 PAYBACK points became 25,000 Miles & More miles. That’s 5,000 bonus miles - for free.
On top of that came my M&M credit card miles:
| Source | Miles |
|---|---|
| M&M Blue welcome bonus | 500 |
| M&M Blue card spend (6 months × €800 × 1 mile/€2) | 2,400 |
| Total M&M credit card | 2,900 |
My M&M mileage account in June: 27,900 miles
Not quite enough yet for the 48,000 miles. But I still had 4 months left.
More on the transfer: PAYBACK to Miles & More transfer bonus guide
Step 4: Keep collecting (July - October)
Over the next 4 months I kept collecting PAYBACK points and using my M&M Blue.
| Source | Miles/points |
|---|---|
| PAYBACK points (Jul-Oct, ~2,000/month) | 8,000 points |
| M&M Blue card spend (4 months) | 1,600 miles |
| Mileage pool (partner flies for work) | 10,500 miles |
| Total additions | ~20,100 |
The mileage pool was a bonus: my partner flies Lufthansa regularly for work and collects her award miles in our shared pool.
Interim status October:
| Source | Miles |
|---|---|
| From PAYBACK transfer (June) | 25,000 |
| M&M credit card (total) | 4,500 |
| PAYBACK (Jul-Oct, transferred without bonus) | 8,000 |
| Mileage pool | 10,500 |
| Available in M&M account | 48,000 miles |
Final tally: 48,000 Miles & More miles. Exactly enough for the booking.
Step 5: The booking (October)
The most exciting moment: searching for availability on miles-and-more.com.
How I searched
- miles-and-more.com → “Redeem miles” → “Award flights”
- Route: New York (JFK) → Munich (MUC)
- Date: Flexible in October/November
- Class: Business Class
- “Flexible dates” activated for the calendar view
What I found
After some flexibility on the dates:
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Date | Tuesday in October |
| Flight | LH JFK→MUC |
| Class | Business Class |
| Fare | Basic (dynamic) |
| Miles needed | 48,000 miles |
| Taxes & fees | €569 |
Important: I deliberately chose a Tuesday. During the week, Miles & More’s dynamic pricing is often 20-30% cheaper than on the weekend. The mileage prices fluctuate by date between ~41,000 and 70,000+ miles.
Watch the taxes: The €569 in taxes and fees sounds like a lot at first. Lufthansa charges high carrier surcharges (fuel surcharges) on award flights - especially on the North Atlantic route. Update March 2026: LH raised the surcharges again - Business Class one-way FRA→USA now costs ~€700-750 in taxes/fees. That’s the biggest criticism of Miles & More redemptions. Still: even at €750 instead of €3,500, it’s still a mega deal.
The booking
- Selected the flight
- Entered passenger data (name exactly as in the passport!)
- Paid the taxes with the M&M credit card (= a few more miles)
- Received the e-ticket
- Reserved a seat (window, of course)

Step 6: The flight
Before the flight
With the miles I’d collected, I didn’t have an AMEX Platinum for lounge access - but Business Class boarding still starts before Economy. And the seat that was waiting for me was worth it.
On board
What awaited me in Lufthansa Business Class:
- Seat: Full lie-flat, 198 cm bed length
- Food: 3-course menu with wine pairing
- Entertainment: 17-inch screen, noise-cancelling headphones
- Service: Personal greeting, amenity kit, pajamas on request
- Flight time: 8.5 hours - 6 of them slept in the flatbed

The moment I turned my seat into a bed and fell asleep above the clouds? Priceless. Or more precisely: €624.
The full bill
What it really cost me
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| PAYBACK AMEX | €0 |
| DM PAYBACK AMEX | €0 |
| M&M Blue (10 months × €5.50) | €55 |
| Extra spending for PAYBACK | €0 (normal purchases) |
| Taxes & fees | €569 |
| Total cost | €624 |
What it would have cost normally
| Comparison | Amount |
|---|---|
| LH Business Class JFK→MUC (cash price) | ~€3,500 |
| My cost | €624 |
| Savings | €2,876 (82%) |
The cents-per-mile value
(€3,500 - €569) ÷ 48,000 miles × 100 = 6.1 cents per mile
At 6.1 cents per mile, this was an excellent redemption. For comparison: Economy Class only yields 0.5-1.5 cents per mile.
More on value calculation: What is a mile worth?
The timeline: From 0 to Business Class
| Month | Action | Mileage balance |
|---|---|---|
| January | Applied for cards (PAYBACK AMEX, DM PAYBACK AMEX, M&M Blue) | 10,500 |
| February-May | Collect PAYBACK with eCoupons | ~17,500 |
| June | Transfer bonus 25% (20,000 PP → 25,000 M&M) | ~27,900 |
| July-October | Keep collecting + mileage pool | ~48,000 |
| October | Business Class JFK→MUC | 0 (redeemed) |
10 months from the first card to the Business Class flight. Without spending a single cent extra. Just shopping more deliberately and using the right cards.
What I would do differently
1. Add an AMEX Gold earlier
With an AMEX Gold* (50,000 MR welcome bonus) I would have built up a second points account for another award flight - in parallel with collecting PAYBACK for M&M.
2. Bigger PAYBACK purchases on bonus coupons
I missed some 10x or 15x eCoupons because I wasn’t paying attention. Daily coupon checking would have brought another 5,000-10,000 extra points.
3. Plan the outbound flight with miles too
With more miles (or the AMEX Gold via a transfer partner) I could have booked the outbound flight to New York with miles as well - then the entire trip would have been financed with miles.
Can anyone pull this off?
Yes. Everything I used is available to everyone:
- PAYBACK AMEX* - Free, for everyone
- DM PAYBACK AMEX* - Free, for everyone
- M&M Blue - €5.50/month, for everyone
- PAYBACK eCoupons - Free in the app
- Transfer bonus - 1-2x per year
Requirements:
- Normal everyday spending (supermarket, drugstore, fuel)
- Patience (6-12 months)
- 5 minutes per day for eCoupons
If you want to be faster or aim higher: with the AMEX Gold* (50,000 MR welcome bonus) or even the AMEX Platinum Business* (200,000 MR), it goes much faster.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How much does a Business Class award flight really cost?
For my booking (Lufthansa Business JFK→MUC): 48,000 miles + €569 taxes. On top came €55 in card annual fees. Total cost: €624 for a flight that regularly costs ~€3,500 - a savings of 82%. The high taxes are typical for Lufthansa - the carrier surcharges on the North Atlantic route were around ~€570 one-way back then (since risen to ~€700-750, as of March 2026).
How long does it take to collect enough miles?
With free cards (PAYBACK AMEX + M&M Blue) and normal everyday spending: 10-12 months for a one-way Business Class flight to the USA. With the AMEX Gold (50,000 MR welcome bonus) it takes 3-6 months.
Do I have to spend more money for this?
No. You spend the same money as before - just more deliberately. Supermarket at EDEKA instead of a discounter without PAYBACK, activate eCoupons beforehand, pay with the right card. The extra costs are limited to the card annual fees.
Is Business Class worth the effort?
At 6.1 cents per mile, definitely yes. You get a lie-flat seat, a 3-course menu, lounge access, and 8+ hours of comfort. For an Economy ticket (cents-per-mile value under 1.5) I wouldn’t redeem miles - better to pay cash there.
Can I also fly First Class with this method?
In principle yes, but you need more miles (approx. 85,000-170,000 for LH First Class USA). With free cards that takes 18-24 months. With an AMEX Platinum Business* (200,000 MR welcome bonus) it goes faster - though AMEX MR are not directly transferable to Miles & More (the detour via PAYBACK at 3:1 isn’t worth it).
What if there’s no Business Class availability?
Be flexible on dates (Tuesday-Thursday is better than the weekend), check alternative routes (via Munich instead of Frankfurt), and search 6-12 months in advance. Last-minute releases sometimes appear 2-14 days before departure.
Does this also work for families?
Yes, via the Miles & More mileage pool, up to 2 adults and 5 children can pool miles together. For a family you naturally need more miles - but with multiple PAYBACK accounts and a mileage pool you also collect faster.
Do I have to pay the taxes in cash?
Yes, taxes and fees (€50-1,300 depending on route and class) must be paid with money. Lufthansa is especially expensive here because of high carrier surcharges (raised again since March 2026). Tip: pay with the M&M credit card, then you collect miles for that too.
Conclusion: Your first Business Class flight is waiting
€624 for Lufthansa Business Class from New York to Munich. 82% saved. And that with completely free cards plus an M&M Blue for €5.50 a month.
The most important thing: Start today. Every day without the right cards is a day you miss points. In 10-12 months you could be lying in a lie-flat seat over the Atlantic.
Your first step: Apply for PAYBACK AMEX* (free, 4,000 PAYBACK points until 14 June 2026) and activate eCoupons.
