Booking an Award Flight: The Complete Beginner's Guide (2026)

Book an award flight step by step: find availability, calculate miles, lock in your award ticket. With practical tips for Miles & More and AMEX transfer partners.

Quick answer: Book an award flight in 5 steps: (1) decide on destination and cabin, (2) check availability with M&M or transfer partners, (3) calculate how many miles you need, (4) make the booking, (5) post-booking checklist. M&M has used dynamic pricing since June 2025. Transfer AMEX MR to BA (5:4) or Flying Blue (5:4). Money-saving tip: departing from abroad saves 30-50%.

You’ve collected your miles - now you want to book your first award flight. But where do you start? Which program? How do you find available seats? And how do you avoid the typical beginner mistakes?

This complete guide explains everything you need to know - from the search all the way to your boarding pass.

First class meal on board

What is an award flight?

With an award flight (also called an “award ticket”), you pay for the flight with miles or points instead of cash. On top of that come:

  • Taxes and fees - Depending on route and cabin, €50-1,300 (unavoidable)
  • Fuel surcharges - With some airlines on top (Lufthansa especially high)

The kicker: a business class ticket that normally costs €3,000-5,000 you can get for 45,000-70,000 miles plus taxes and fees. Careful: with Lufthansa, high carrier surcharges are added - especially on the North Atlantic route (~€700-750 one-way, raised again as of March 2026). Even so, the savings are typically around 80-90%.

Which miles program should you use?

In Germany there are two relevant systems:

1. Miles & More (Lufthansa)

FeatureDetails
AirlinesLufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, LH City Airlines + 25 Star Alliance partners
Pricing systemDynamic (LH Group) + fixed chart (partners)
Earning milesM&M credit card, flights, PAYBACK transfer
Special featureDynamic pricing for LH Group since June 2025

2. AMEX Membership Rewards (transfer partners)

FeatureDetails
AirlinesBritish Airways, Singapore Airlines, Flying Blue, ANA + 12 more
Pricing systemVaries by partner
Earning pointsAMEX Gold, Platinum, Business Gold, Business Platinum
Special featureFlexible transfers to 14 partners

Important: AMEX MR cannot be transferred directly to Miles & More. The detour via PAYBACK (3:1) isn’t worth it. More on this: AMEX vs Miles & More: Why you need BOTH

Step 1: Decide on destination and cabin

Before you search, answer these questions:

  • Where to? (continent, specific destination)
  • When? (month, flexible dates?)
  • Which cabin? (economy, business, first)
  • How many people?
  • One-way or round trip?

Realistic mileage requirements

Values vary by program, airline and time of booking.

Step 2: Search for availability

This is the most important and most difficult step. Airlines only make a limited number of seats available for award flights.

For Miles & More award flights:

  1. Go to miles-and-more.com
  2. Click on “Redeem miles” → “Award flights”
  3. Enter route and dates
  4. Activate “Flexible dates” for a calendar view

For AMEX transfer partners:

  • British Airways → ba.com (Avios search)
  • Singapore Airlines → singaporeair.com (KrisFlyer search)
  • Flying Blue → flyingblue.com (Air France/KLM search)

Tip: Search several programs at the same time. Sometimes one partner has availability where another has none.

TimingAvailability
330 days outBooking window opens - best selection
6-12 months outGood availability, especially for business/first
3-6 months outMediocre, popular routes often gone
2-4 weeks outLast releases - luck of the draw
1-7 days outOccasional last-minute availability

Golden rule: For business and first class, search 6-12 months in advance.

Signs of good availability

  • Off-season: January-March, September-November
  • Weekday: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
  • Less in-demand routes: Sofia instead of London, Oslo instead of Paris
  • Right after the booking window opens: 330 days out

Step 3: Calculate how many miles you need

Miles & More: Two pricing systems

Since June 2025, Miles & More has two parallel systems:

1. Dynamic pricing (Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian):

  • Price varies depending on demand
  • Cheaper prices when demand is low
  • Three fare classes: Basic (cheap, non-refundable), Basic Plus, Flex (expensive, refundable)
  • Departing from abroad is often 30-50% cheaper

2. Fixed partner award chart (Star Alliance partners):

  • United, ANA, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, etc.
  • Fixed mileage values by zone
  • Often better value for money than dynamic pricing

Practical tip: Always check both options. A partner award via Singapore Airlines to Asia can be significantly cheaper than the dynamic LH price.

AMEX transfer partners: Calculate the value

When transferring AMEX MR to airline partners, the ratio is usually 5:4 (20% loss with the best partners):

PartnerTransfer ratioGood for
British Airways (Avios)5:4Short-haul Europe
Iberia, Flying Blue, SAS5:4Europe + promo awards
Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer)3:2Asia
Emirates2:1Avoid (50% loss!)

Careful since August 2025: Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Delta, Etihad and Qatar have been devalued from 5:4 to 3:2. Emirates is now 2:1.

Step 4: Make the booking

Once you’ve found availability:

  1. Select the flight - Check the fare (Basic vs. Flex)
  2. Enter passenger details - Name exactly as in your passport
  3. Pay taxes and fees - By credit card
  4. Secure the confirmation - E-ticket comes by email
  5. Choose your seat - Often only possible after booking

Important booking notes

  • Name must match exactly - No nickname, no abbreviations
  • With AMEX: transfer first, then book - Transfer takes 24-48 hours
  • With M&M: online or by phone - Complex routes are better by phone
  • Pay taxes with the right card - AMEX for MR points, M&M card for miles

Step 5: After the booking

  • Reserve your seat - Window or aisle? Important in business class
  • Add your frequent flyer number - For status miles and lounge access
  • Online check-in - 24-48 hours before departure
  • Plan your lounge - With AMEX Platinum* or Priority Pass

Avoid these 5 common mistakes

Mistake 1: Searching too late

Business class availability is best 6-12 months before departure. If you search two weeks out, you usually won’t find anything anymore.

Mistake 2: Being inflexible on dates

A single day’s difference can determine availability. Plan for at least 2-3 weeks of leeway.

Mistake 3: Only searching for direct flights

Connecting flights often have better availability. Frankfurt → Dubai → Singapore instead of Frankfurt → Singapore nonstop.

Mistake 4: Ignoring taxes and fees

Lufthansa charges high carrier surcharges on award flights. North Atlantic routes cost ~€700-750 one-way (raised again as of March 2026), Asia routes ~€300-400. Check beforehand whether the miles booking is worth it. Rule of thumb: taxes should be under 30% of the cash price. For business class FRA→NYC (€569 taxes vs. €3,500 cash price = 16%) that’s clearly the case.

Mistake 5: Trying to transfer AMEX to Miles & More

Not directly. The detour via PAYBACK (3 MR = 1 point = 1 mile) is value destruction. You’re better off transferring AMEX MR to British Airways, Singapore Airlines and others.

Money-saving tips for cheaper award flights

1. Depart from abroad

With dynamic M&M pricing, departing from elsewhere in Europe is often 30-50% cheaper:

DepartureBusiness class NYC (one-way)
Frankfurt45,000-55,000 miles
Oslo~35,000 miles
Prague~31,000 miles
Sofia~28,000 miles

A cheap connecting flight (€50-100) saves you thousands of miles.

2. One-way instead of round trip

In the dynamic system, separate one-way bookings can be cheaper than a round-trip ticket. Check both options.

3. Use partner airlines

When Lufthansa is expensive, check Star Alliance partners (United, ANA, Singapore). The fixed award chart is often cheaper than dynamic LH prices.

4. Be flexible on timing

Tuesday through Thursday is usually cheaper than the weekend. Off-season beats peak season.

Not enough miles yet?

No problem. With the right credit cards, you’ll collect enough quickly:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I book an award flight?

Search for availability on your miles program’s website (e.g. miles-and-more.com), select a flight, enter your passenger details and pay the taxes and fees by credit card. The rest is paid with miles.

How many miles do I need for an award flight?

That depends on route and cabin. Europe short-haul: 15,000-30,000 miles (economy). Business class USA: 100,000-140,000 miles (round trip). First class Asia: 200,000-320,000 miles (round trip).

When should I book my award flight?

6-12 months in advance is ideal. The booking window opens 330 days before departure. For business and first class, booking early is crucial - popular routes go fast.

Can I cancel an award flight?

With Miles & More: full refund in the Flex fare, no refund in the Basic fare (not even in business/first class!). With AMEX transfer partners, the respective program rules apply.

Are there additional costs?

Yes, taxes and fees (€50-1,300 depending on route and cabin) and with some airlines fuel surcharges. These cost real money and cannot be paid with miles.

Can I book with Lufthansa using AMEX points?

Not directly. The detour via PAYBACK (3 MR = 1 point = 1 mile) isn’t worth it. But you can transfer AMEX MR to British Airways, Singapore Airlines or Flying Blue and book award flights there with Star Alliance or other partners.

Is economy class worth it with miles?

Usually not. The cents-per-mile value is significantly lower in economy class than in business or first. Save your miles for premium cabins, where the savings versus the cash price are greatest.

What do I do if there’s no availability?

Be flexible on dates and routes. Check alternative departure airports, connecting flights and other airlines in the same alliance. Sometimes seats are released at short notice (2-14 days out).

Conclusion: Your first award flight

The most important rules at a glance:

  1. Search early - 6-12 months in advance

  3. Use both systems - M&M and AMEX transfer partners
  4. Check the taxes - Some routes aren’t worth it
  5. Book premium cabins - That’s where the value of miles is highest

Your first goal: a business class flight within Europe. Doable with 30,000-60,000 miles and an experience you won’t forget.
