Earning Avios in Germany 2026: AMEX 5:4, British Airways, Iberia & Qatar
Avios guide for Germany 2026: transfer AMEX MR at 5:4 to British Airways Club and Iberia Club (3:2 to Qatar), move Avios freely between seven programs, household account for up to 6 people, award chart per segment (Frankfurt–London from 4,000 Avios), the 36-month expiry rule and the sweet spots for Europe and long-haul.
Status:
Quick answer: Avios is the shared mileage currency of British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus, Finnair, Vueling and Loganair. Germans earn Avios mainly via AMEX Membership Rewards: 5:4 to British Airways Club and Iberia Club (from 1,000 points, up to 1 business day), 3:2 to Qatar Privilege Club. Avios can be moved freely between the programs and pooled in a household account with up to 6 people. The award chart is calculated per flight segment by distance: Frankfurt–London costs from 4,000 Avios one-way in Economy and 7,750 in Business (off-peak). Avios only expire after 36 months without activity. This guide covers earning routes, prices and the sweet spots for Germany.

Avios is underrated in Germany. Most collectors know the currency as “British Airways miles” and wave it off because they rarely fly to London. Yet Avios is now the currency of seven programs, covers the entire network of Qatar Airways, Iberia, Finnair and American Airlines through oneworld, and is reachable via AMEX in Germany at the best possible rate. For short-haul flights within Europe there is hardly a cheaper mileage currency.

What Is Avios?
Avios is not an airline mile in the classic sense but a currency shared by several programs. You can hold Avios in any of these programs and move them between them:
| Program | Airline | Alliance |
|---|---|---|
| British Airways Club | British Airways | oneworld |
| Iberia Club | Iberia | oneworld |
| Qatar Airways Privilege Club | Qatar Airways | oneworld |
| Finnair Plus | Finnair | oneworld |
| AerClub | Aer Lingus | – |
| Vueling Club | Vueling | – |
| Loganair Loyalty | Loganair | – |
The trick: each program has its own award prices, fees and availability, but the same currency. You earn in one place and book wherever it is cheapest.

How to Earn Avios in Germany
Route 1: AMEX Membership Rewards (the main route)
AMEX in Germany transfers to three Avios programs, at different rates:
| Program | Ratio | Minimum transfer | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Airways Club | 5:4 | 1,000 MR | up to 1 business day |
| Iberia Club | 5:4 | 1,000 MR | up to 1 business day |
| Qatar Privilege Club | 3:2 | 900 MR | 7 business days |
Always transfer to British Airways or Iberia, never directly to Qatar. 5:4 instead of 3:2 makes the difference between 80,000 and 66,667 Avios on 100,000 MR. Since Avios can be moved freely between the programs, they still end up in the Qatar account when needed, just without the rate loss. The full partner list is in the transfer partner overview.
The points come from the AMEX Platinum* (85,000 MR welcome bonus, which is 68,000 Avios) or the AMEX Gold* (50,000 MR, i.e. 40,000 Avios).
Route 2: Flights with oneworld airlines
On tickets from British Airways, Iberia, Qatar, Finnair and the other oneworld partners you earn Avios based on the fare. Sensible as a side effect, too slow as a strategy.
Route 3: Revolut RevPoints
Avios is one of the programs into which Revolut RevPoints can be transferred. How Revolut works as a third points world is in the Premium Handbook.
Route 4: Buying Avios
British Airways sells Avios directly. That only makes sense to top up shortly before a specific booking, never as an earning strategy.
Moving and Pooling Avios
Two features make Avios especially practical for families and couples:
- Transfer between programs: Avios can be moved between British Airways Club, Iberia Club, AerClub, Vueling Club, Qatar Privilege Club, Finnair Plus and Loganair Loyalty. So you book Iberia flights via the Iberia account and Qatar flights via Qatar, without earning several times over.
- Household account: Up to six people in one household (including children) pool their Avios in one shared account. Four family members with 10,000 Avios each make 40,000 for a shared Business Class flight.
- Transfer to friends: Avios can also be transferred to other people outside the household.

For AMEX collectors this means: a couple with two AMEX accounts transfers both points balances to Avios and pools them in the household account. With Miles & More that only works via the mileage pool, with most other programs not at all.
What Does an Avios Award Flight Cost?
Avios is calculated per flight segment by distance, not by region. The values apply off-peak, one-way, per segment (after the December 2025 devaluation):
| Zone | Distance (miles) | Economy | Business | First |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | up to 650 | 4,000 | 7,750 | – |
| 2 | up to 1,150 | 6,500 | 13,000 | – |
| 3 | up to 2,000 | 8,500 | 17,000 | 25,500 |
| 4 | up to 3,000 | 10,000 | 22,000 | 34,000 |
| 5 | up to 4,000 | 13,000 | 29,500 | 44,000 |
| 6 | up to 5,500 | 16,250 | 47,750 | 68,000 |
| 7 | up to 6,500 | 21,750 | 56,000 | 85,000 |
| 8 | over 6,500 | 32,500 | 68,000 | 102,000 |
Peak dates sit around 25 to 50% higher. Important for the math: on connecting itineraries the segments are added up. Frankfurt–London–New York is Zone 1 plus Zone 5, not one zone for the total distance. Our miles calculator does this automatically via the cheapest hub.
Examples from Germany
| Route | Segment | Economy | Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt–London (BA) | Zone 1 | 4,000 | 7,750 |
| Munich–Madrid (Iberia) | Zone 2 | 6,500 | 13,000 |
| Frankfurt–Doha (Qatar) | Zone 4 | 10,000 | 22,000 |
| Frankfurt–London–New York (BA) | Zone 1 + 5 | 17,000 | 37,250 |
| Frankfurt–Doha–Bangkok (Qatar) | Zone 4 + 4 | 20,000 | 44,000 |
Two caveats: on BA long-haul flights, high fuel surcharges are added, which can quickly push a Business Class award to €400 to €600. And the prices are off-peak, in holiday periods they are higher. With Iberia and Qatar the surcharges are usually lower, but availability is more variable.
The Sweet Spots for German Collectors
1. Short-haul Europe with Reward Flight Saver
On British Airways flights to and from London Heathrow and Gatwick, BA guarantees a minimum number of award seats: eight in Economy, two in Premium Economy, four in Business per flight. For the cheap award flights you pay a low flat fee including taxes plus a fixed Avios amount. Frankfurt–London for 4,000 Avios plus the flat fee is therefore one of the most predictable award flights there is, and booking on ba.com from Europe is free.
2. Iberia from Madrid to Latin America
Iberia flies a dense network from Madrid to South and Central America. With Avios in the Iberia account, Business Class flights there are often cheaper than via Star Alliance, and the surcharges are lower than with British Airways. The feeder from Germany (Zone 2) is added.
3. Qatar Airways Q-Suite
Qatar Airways’ Business Class is regarded as one of the best in the world. Via Avios it is bookable from Germany via Doha, for example to Bangkok or the Maldives. Important since July 2026: anyone booking Qatar award flights for travel companions needs an account older than 30 days with at least one Avios earned from flying. To get around that, book via the British Airways account.
4. Avios part-payment
If your balance is not enough for a full award, you can reduce the cash price of a ticket from 1,000 Avios. The value per Avios is lower than for a full award, but it is a way to use small leftover balances.
The Rules You Need to Know
- Expiry: Avios do not expire as long as you earn, spend, buy or transfer at least one Avios within 36 months. Three years without any activity and the account is empty.
- Taxes and surcharges are added to every award. On BA’s own flights as a fixed flat fee (short-haul) or with a high fuel surcharge (long-haul), with partners variable.
- Missing Avios can be claimed up to six months after the flight, new members even for BA flights from the three months before joining.
- AMEX transfers are final. Find the award first, then transfer. The transfer to BA and Iberia usually takes only hours.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How can I earn Avios in Germany?
Mainly via AMEX Membership Rewards (5:4 to British Airways Club and Iberia Club), on oneworld flights and via Revolut RevPoints. There is no German Avios credit card.
Is it better to transfer AMEX points to British Airways or to Iberia?
Both get 5:4. Since Avios can be moved between the programs, the first recipient does not matter. Sensible is the account in which you want to book first.
How many Avios do I need for Frankfurt–London?
From 4,000 Avios one-way in Economy and 7,750 in Business (off-peak, Zone 1 up to 650 miles) plus a flat fee for taxes and charges.
Can I pool Avios with my family?
Yes, via the household account with up to six people, children included. That is one of the biggest advantages of Avios over other programs.
Do Avios expire?
Only after 36 months without any activity. A single earning or redemption transaction resets the clock.
Why not transfer directly to Qatar?
Because AMEX transfers to Qatar at only 3:2, but to British Airways and Iberia at 5:4. Via the BA or Iberia account and the free Avios transfer, the Avios still end up with Qatar, with 20% more balance.
Is there currently an AMEX transfer bonus to Avios?
No (as of 5 September 2026). The only active AMEX transfer bonus in Germany runs until 31 October 2026 to Marriott Bonvoy. Avios bonuses have existed in the past and are announced on amex.de.
Are Avios worth more than Miles & More miles?
On European short-haul usually yes: 4,000 Avios for Frankfurt–London versus 25,000 to 28,000 Miles & More miles for a European round-trip according to the award table. On long-haul it depends on surcharges and availability. The key difference remains: Avios are directly reachable via AMEX, Miles & More is not.
Conclusion
For German AMEX collectors, Avios is the most versatile mileage currency: the best AMEX rate, seven programs with one currency, a household account for the whole family and a predictable award chart with guaranteed seats on short-haul. Anyone who earns AMEX points and is not only looking for Lufthansa flights should have a British Airways or Iberia account.
