Chase 5/24 Rule: Application Timing for German Collectors (2026)
The 5/24 rule is the most important Chase rule — and the most common reason for application denials. What counts (including German AMEX!), what doesn't. Complete strategy for German applicants: when to apply, in which order, when to pause. Incl. business-card workaround, authorized user, and application order AMEX → Chase → Citi.
Status:
Quick answer: Chase automatically denies applications for personal credit cards if the applicant has opened 5 or more new credit cards (from any issuer) in the last 24 months. German AMEX, M&M and PAYBACK cards count too, because Chase asks about your existing cards on the application form. What does NOT count: business cards from Chase/Amex/Citi/USB/WF/CapOne (they don’t appear on your personal credit report), hard inquiries without an account opening, authorized-user accounts from 2024 onward (with exceptions), charge cards (ambiguous). Strategy for German collectors: a 12-24 month application pause before your first Chase application — or deliberately go Chase-first from day one. If you start with a DE AMEX stack (Plat + Gold + PAYBACK in 12 months = 3+ cards), you’ll hit the 5/24 limit right after the DE welcome-bonus phase.

The 5/24 rule is not an official Chase statement — Chase doesn’t confirm it publicly. But it has been empirically verified across thousands of application data points since 2016. If you have 5+ cards in 24 months, you get denied at Chase. Period.
This article shows you what counts for you as a German applicant, how to plan, and which order is optimal.
Disclaimer: As of May 2026. The 5/24 rule is not officially confirmed by Chase and can change at any time. Not financial or legal advice.
What counts toward 5/24?
✅ Counts
| Card type | Detail |
|---|---|
| Personal US credit cards | All (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, Discover) |
| Personal German credit cards | All (AMEX Plat, Gold, PAYBACK, M&M Visa/Mastercard) |
| Personal EU/UK/Asia credit cards | All (even in another market) |
| Authorized user accounts | Up to 2023 they counted, from 2024 on often NOT anymore (variable) |
| Store cards with a credit function | e.g. Macy’s, Best Buy (US-only) |
❌ Does NOT count
| Card type | Detail |
|---|---|
| Business cards Chase/Amex/Citi/USB/WF/CapOne | Don’t report to your personal credit report |
| Business cards Discover/BoA | Do report to the personal credit report → count |
| Hard inquiries without an account opening | Application denied = no new account |
| Charge cards (AMEX Plat/Gold) | Ambiguous — sometimes yes, sometimes no |
| Closed cards | Only open accounts count |
Practical example: what a German collector typically holds
| Card | Opened | Counts toward 5/24? |
|---|---|---|
| AMEX Platinum DE | 06.2024 | ✅ Yes |
| AMEX Gold DE | 09.2024 | ✅ Yes |
| AMEX Business Gold DE | 11.2024 | ❌ No (business) |
| PAYBACK AMEX | 02.2025 | ✅ Yes |
| M&M Blue | 04.2025 | ✅ Yes |
| AMEX Platinum Business DE | 07.2025 | ❌ No (business) |
| As of May 2026: | 5 personal cards in 24 months |
→ 5/24 reached. Chase would deny an application in May 2026.
How do you check your current 5/24 status?
Method 1: Your own list
Make a list of all personal credit cards you’ve opened in the last 24 months. Card opening date, not the application date. Count them.
Method 2: SCHUFA report (DE)
A free SCHUFA report (1× per year, schufa.de) shows all German credit accounts. Note: SCHUFA also lists bank accounts and mobile-phone contracts — only the credit cards count.
Method 3: Credit Karma (USA)
If you already have a US address, you can sign up for free at Credit Karma. It lists all US cards + opening dates. German cards don’t appear — you have to factor those in manually.
Application order: Chase-first strategy
If you have all three major US issuers in your plan (Chase, AMEX, Citi/CapOne), you should apply for Chase first — while you’re still under 5/24.
Optimal order for German collectors
Phase 0 (Preparation — 12 months):
- No new cards in DE or US
- Keep existing cards if applicable (closing reduces your limit but doesn’t change 5/24)
Phase 1 (Chase Sapphire — once you have an ITIN/SSN):
- 1× Chase Sapphire Preferred (or Reserve) → 75-100k UR (as of July 2026: both at 100k; CSP standard 75k)
- Meet the spend requirement
- Wait 6-12 months
Phase 2 (Chase Ink Business — once you have an LLC):
- 1× Chase Ink Business Preferred → 90k UR
- A business card does not count toward 5/24, so it doesn’t hurt your counter
- Wait 3-6 months
Phase 3 (AMEX US — stack welcome bonuses):
- 1× AMEX Platinum US → 175k MR (targeted)
- 6 months later: 1× AMEX Gold US → 100k MR (targeted)
Phase 4 (Citi/CapOne — supplement):
- 1× Citi Strata Premier → ~75k Citi ThankYou Points
- 1× Capital One Venture X → 75k Miles
Result: three US issuers’ cards, all welcome bonuses claimed, with no 5/24 block.
Workaround 1: Business cards
Business cards from Chase, Amex, Citi, US Bank, Wells Fargo, Capital One do not count toward 5/24. If you have a US LLC with an EIN, you can apply for Chase Ink cards without raising your counter.
| Chase Ink cards | Welcome bonus 2026 |
|---|---|
| Ink Business Preferred ($95) | ~90,000 UR / $8,000 spend |
| Ink Business Cash ($0) | $750 cashback / $6,000 spend |
| Ink Business Unlimited ($0) | $750 cashback / $6,000 spend |
| Ink Business Premier ($195) | $1,000 cashback / $10,000 spend |
Sweet spot: If you open 4 Ink cards in 4 months, you collect 270,000+ UR + $1,500 cashback without raising your 5/24 counter. Prerequisite: a US LLC with an EIN.
Workaround 2: Reduce authorized users
If you’re an authorized user on a card, you can often remove that account (call the issuer, “Please remove me as an authorized user”). That updates your personal credit report — and the removed account no longer counts toward 5/24.
Note: The removal can take 1-3 months to become visible on the credit report.
Workaround 3: 12-24 month pause
The simplest route: take a pause. If you don’t apply for any new cards for 12 months, you drop to 4/24 (from 5/24). A 24-month pause = 0/24.
Strategy: If you’ve claimed all the welcome bonuses in your market and want to prepare for Chase, pause for 12 months, then you’re eligible to apply again.
What Chase asks on the application form
When you apply, Chase asks about your existing cards (the exact form varies):
“Please list any other credit cards you currently hold. Issuer, last 4 digits, monthly spend.”
Important: If you don’t list your German cards, you could be classified as committing application fraud if Chase discovers it later (credit-bureau matching, social media, etc.). Always answer honestly.
When Chase still denies you (even under 5/24)
5/24 is just ONE filter. Chase also checks:
| Factor | Criterion |
|---|---|
| Credit Score | Typically 720+ for Sapphire cards |
| Income | At least $35,000-50,000 stated |
| Existing Chase Cards | Max ~5 Chase cards at once (informal cap) |
| Recent Chase History | If you were recently denied, you often get denied again |
| Application speed | Several applications in 30 days can raise suspicion |
Important for ITIN applicants: If you apply with an ITIN (instead of an SSN), you often get a shorter credit history shown. Chase recognizes this, scrutinizes more strictly, and denies faster. Strategy: Build at least 12-18 months of US credit history before your first Chase application (1-2 ITIN-eligible cards first, e.g. AMEX via Global Transfer or Capital One with an ITIN).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do my German credit cards really count toward 5/24?
Yes. On the Chase application form you have to list your existing cards. False statements are application fraud. Even if German cards don’t appear in the US credit bureau, Chase knows them from your application.
What happens if I exceed the 5/24 threshold?
Chase denies you automatically — with no human review. Even a call to reconsideration rarely helps. The only solution: wait 12-24 months.
How many Chase cards can I have at once?
Informal cap: 5-6 Chase cards (personal + business combined). If you already have 5+ Chase cards, you often get denied on a new application — even under 5/24.
Does 5/24 apply when downgrading from Sapphire Preferred to Reserve?
No. Down-/upgrades of existing cards are not a new application and don’t count toward 5/24. If you upgrade from Preferred to Reserve, you stay on the same account.
What about AMEX charge cards (Platinum, Gold)?
Ambiguous. AMEX charge cards (technically “no preset spending limit”) are sometimes reported as a “credit card,” sometimes not — depending on the credit bureau and the account age. Conservative assumption: They count toward 5/24.
Authorized user accounts from 2024 onward — do they still count?
Chase started counting authorized user accounts less strictly in 2023. As of 2026: variable. Conservative assumption: They count until proven otherwise.
How can I repair my 5/24 status if I was denied?
Options:
- Wait 12-24 months — natural decay
- Get authorized-user accounts removed — if you have any
- Call the Chase reconsideration line — rarely successful, but free to try
Are ITIN applicants especially at risk at Chase?
Yes. ITIN holders typically have a shorter US credit history. Chase denies more strictly — even when 5/24 is satisfied. Strategy: ITIN application → build 12-18 months of credit history (1-2 ITIN-eligible cards) → then Chase.
Does it help to open a Chase bank account?
Sometimes yes. If you maintain a Chase checking/savings account for 6+ months (with regular deposits), you get a slight edge on card applications. Not confirmed, but empirically observed.
What about the Citi 8/65 rule?
Citi has its own rules — typically: max 1 Citi card per 8 days, max 2 Citi cards per 65 days. Stricter than 5/24 in terms of pace, but not as hard a cross-issuer rule.
Bottom line: plan before you apply
5/24 is the most important anti-churning rule in the US — and it affects German applicants too. If you combine AMEX, M&M and PAYBACK cards without a plan, you quickly hit the 5/24 limit before you even apply for your first US cards.
Recommended order for German collectors:
- Foundation: claim welcome bonuses in DE (max 4 cards in 24 months)
- Apply for an ITIN — if US cards are planned
- Chase first (Sapphire Preferred or Reserve)
- Chase Ink Business (if you have an LLC)
- AMEX US Platinum + Gold US (stack welcome bonuses)
- Citi Strata Premier + CapOne Venture X (to supplement)
- Pause when you reach 5/24 — 12 months, then continue
If you stick to this order, you’ll collect ~10 US cards in 3 years + 5-7 DE cards — with no 5/24 blocks and no issuer lockouts.
